寇白门,明末人,名湄,字白门,“秦淮八艳”之一,有“女侠”之称。明末清初文人余怀所著《板桥杂记》记载:“白门娟娟静美,跌荡风流。能度曲,善画兰,粗知拈韵吟诗,然滑易不能竟学。”寇白门十八岁时归南明保国公朱国弼。明清易代,朱国弼归降清朝,后被捕,寇白门以千金为其赎身,从此义绝,仍归秦淮歌楼而终。钱谦益《金陵杂诗·其十》有云:“丛残红粉念君恩,女侠谁知寇白门?”

 

此次“风景与书:明珠美术馆两周年庆典展”展出的《寇白门小像》为著名工笔人物画家黄均所绘。黄均(1914—2011),号懋忱,祖籍台湾淡水,生于北京,与王叔晖同于1928年入北京中国画学研究会学画。该会集当时北方艺术家之大成,会长金城,副会长周肇祥,会中名家有齐白石、陈半丁、秦仲文、马普,吴镜汀、徐燕荪、王雪涛等。黄均初从徐燕荪习人物画,后又师从陈少梅、刘凌沧。

此幅《寇白门小像》人物娟娟静好,淡雅风流,正是黄均在中国画学研究会期间所作。时为甲戌(1934),作者方当弱冠之年,而下笔不俗,具有古意。画上周肇祥题跋,过录吴梅邨《赠寇白门》诗六首,并称此像底本出于明末画家杨文骢(字龙友)。周小英跋文提及寇白门小像的源流,杨文骢与寇白门所处时代相同,较清代画家樊圻、吴宏合作的《寇湄像》,其画像底本更为可靠,而此帧之佳,更缘绘像者黄均学艺初成,翩翩年少,故出笔不俗。

寇湄,字白门,金陵教坊女,能吟诗度曲,善画兰,为保国公朱国弼所纳,明亡,保国北行,白门自赎归。梅邨相遇秦淮,不胜沦落之感,因赠以诗。此为杨龙友传本,黄生懋忱摹写逼真,至堪藏弆,付工装池,并录吴诗于后:
南内无人吹洞箫,莫愁湖畔马蹄骄。殿前伐尽灵和柳,谁与萧娘斗舞腰。朱公转徙致千金,一舸西施计自深。今日只因勾践死,难将红粉结同心。同时姊妹入奚官,挏酒黄羊去住难。细马驮来纱罩眼,鲈鱼时节到长干。重点卢家薄薄妆,夜深羞过大功坊。中山内宴香车入,宝髻云鬟列几行。曾见通侯侍值迟,县官今日选蛾眉。窈娘到处雷塘火,漂泊杨家有雪儿。旧宫门外落花飞,侠少同游并马归。此地故人驺唱入,沉香火暖护朝衣。

周小英跋文

南京博物院藏樊圻与吴宏合作寇白门像,画于顺治八年,为寇氏像传世最早者。此帧所据底本,周退翁云为杨龙友所作,来源更先,亦当更为近真。小像橅于甲戌,作者黄均先生年方二十,正毕业于中国画学研究会,为风华掩映千人时。故此帧精美简净,特嘉之作。先生后来所绘,反不及此生动。乖合有时,余字亦然。

English version
Kou Mei (1624-?), with Baimen as her courtesy name, was one of the “Eight Beauties of Qinhuai”. She was good at composing music, drawing orchid, and writing poems. She became a concubine of Zhu Guobi, the Funing Marquis of Ming. Zhu surrendered to the Qing authority during the collapse of Ming but was still arrested. Kou gathered a large amount of money to buy his freedom back, but left him after that and spent her rest years back in the Qinhuai area.

The exhibit is the portrait of Kou Baimen by Huang Jun (1914-2011) whose style name was Maochen and was born in Beijing. He joined the academy of Chinese painting in 1928, the same year as Wang Shuhui. Many famous artists gathered in the academy and Huang started learning figure painting after Xu Yansun. The portrait depicts Kou Baimen as an elegant and graceful lady. It was drawn in 1934 when Huang was a member of the academy of Chinese painting. He was still young but provided a brilliant performance in the portrait which was drawn in a consistent way to the Chinese tradition.

 

Zhou Zhaoxiang’s postscript copied the six poems of “Dedicated to Kou Baimen” by Wu Meicun and claimed that the portrait was based on that of Yang Wencong, a painter in late Ming Dynasty. Zhou Xiaoying’s postscript discusses the history of all portraits of Kou, and then mentions that Yang Wencong lived in the same era as Kou, hence his portrait should be quite reliable. She also admires Huang’s brilliant performance in this portrait when he had just graduated as a young and hopeful artist.
