薛素素，字素卿，明万历年间人，聪慧出群，擅弹筝，擅画，擅骑，又能诗，留有诗集《南游草》。明末清初文坛领袖钱谦益在《列朝诗集小传》中，称其“善弹走马，以女侠自命，置弹于小婢额上，弹去而婢不知”，至于“江湖侠少年，皆慕称‘薛五’矣。少游燕中，与五陵年少挟弹出郊，连骑遨游，观者加堵”。薛素素的名声，甚至远播蛮夷，连钱谦益都不禁叹道：“北里名姬，至于倾动蛮夷，古所希有也！”
薛素素既是才女，又是侠女，虽不是“秦淮八艳”，但其人其事流传甚广，小像也流传多本。此次“风景与书：明珠美术馆两周年庆典展”展出的《薛素素小像》，出自著名工笔重彩人物女画家王叔晖（1912—1985）之手，她最著名的作品是《西厢记》连环画，后来还印成了邮票。范景中称王叔晖是“建国后画古典题材最著名的画家之一”，这幅《薛素素小像》正是她十八岁时奉师命所作，临摹自清道光年间画家于世球（号莲浦，浙江海宁人，工人物、花鸟）的原本。

名家题跋
此画中的薛素素时年二十岁，虽然据说是“通十八班武艺”的女侠，但其像娟娟静好，脩脩独立，衣装面容设色妍雅，人物神情若有所思，可以想见伊人风神。画上有画家周肇祥（1880—1954，号退翁）、书法家苏庚春（1924—2001）题跋。周肇祥的跋文谈及薛素素生平，且提出此像图式源自道光间画家于世球本，知其渊源有自，非为虚造。周小英的题跋更加详细，既为素素钩沉轶事，又云素素佳人绝代，传世画像却大多平平，此像虽为王叔晖传世最早之作，却技艺老成，天纵之才不可自抑，故尤其可爱可珍。
周小英为《薛素素小像》所书题跋
薛素素乃红拂十三妹之属，出佩越女剑，归磨素脂砚也。尝撰《南游草》，有《西湖晴泛》六言诗、《西陵闺咏》卷九收录。其小像曾传之川贵，倾动蛮夷，然今时所见佳者尟遇。此为王叔晖女史所绘，英华沉浮，栩栩纸上，乃素素像最上者。叔晖时年十八岁，亦其画传世最早者，画史珍品也。
尝见摹此像，题为柳如是二十岁小像者，署名陈枚，并摹李佐贤题识，伪品也。

The portrayed lady is Xue Susu, a famous female in the Wanli years in Ming Dynasty. She was said to be extraordinarily intelligent and was skillful in both literati and sportive activities. This made her the most attractive figure then. There were multiple portraits of her after her death, and the displayed one is a tracing copy by Wang Shuhui (1912-1985) of the portrait by Yu Shiqiu in the Daoguang years, when Wang was 18 years old.
The portrait here depicts Xue Susu as an elegant and graceful lady standing with some thoughts in her mind. There are postscripts by Zhou Zhaoxiang (1880-1954) and Su Gengchun (1924-2001), the former of which pointed out that the composition was based on that of Yu Shiqiu’s version in the Daoguang years, hence it cannot be a forgery. On the other hand, Zhou Xiaoying’s postscript states that although most portraits of famous beauties were no better than ordinary, this portrait by Wang was a skillful work of hers, which makes it even more precious.
