After me, the flood

A Conversation on the occasion of a book launch: Ophiolite exhibition catalogue

In Das Kapital, Marx employed the metaphor of floods to illustrate our tendency to pass on disasters to future generations and sacrifice the future. This metaphor exposed the human inclination to act without considering the consequences. In recent years, extreme weather events and natural disasters have occurred at a growing frequency, including the recent string of heavy rains and floods that have inflicted significant losses upon humanity. This relentless onslaught has thrust humanity and nature into an extreme binary opposition, compelling us to urgently reassess our relationship with the environment. As a response to this pressing issue, our exhibition “Ophiolite” explores how to perceive the connection between individuals and the unknown other and mend these fragile bonds.

To commemorate the release of Ophiolite exhibition catalogue, we will be hosting a dialogue featuring three young scholars. This dialogue will take a broader ecological and water systems perspective to re-examine the intricate relationship between humans and water, with a focus on the prevalent issue of flood disasters that surround us.

Join us on Saturday, September 23, at 3pm, to explore the fascinating world of natural fractures and barriers. As our exhibition advocates, gaining a correct understanding is, in and of itself, a proactive step towards mending the fragile links that connect us.
