“语言学创新”系列讲座简介

“语言学创新”系列讲座 (Innovation in Linguistics)由北航外院国际期刊、ESCI收录期刊Cognitive Semantics (COSE)主办。

COSE

Innovation

推动“语言学创新”

截至目前,COSE有幸邀请到Noam Chomsky、Elizabeth Traugott、Martin Hilpert、Stefan Gries等国际知名语言学家,成功举办过七场“语言学创新”讲座。

主讲人简介

Arie Verhagen

Arie Verhagen (PhD 1986) is professor emeritus of Language, Culture, and Cognition at Leiden University (The Netherlands). He previously held positions at the Free University in Amsterdam, the University of Utrecht and Leiden University, as professor of Dutch Linguistics. From 1996 till 2004, he served as editor-in-chief of the journal Cognitive Linguistics. His grammatical work includes studies on word order, passive, causative, connectives, wh-questions, complementation, and other construction types. With his 2005 monograph Constructions of Intersubjectivity. Discourse, Syntax, and Cognition (Oxford University Press), he contributed to the ‘social turn’ in cognitive linguistics. He has been a supervisor of several interdisciplinary projects, on topics such as cultural evolution in human language and bird song, computational modeling of language acquisition and language change, stylistics, and dialogues. His present research is framed in a radically usage-based approach and focuses on two related themes: reconstructing some of the conceptual foundations of linguistics in terms of evolutionary theory (cf. his Ten Lectures on Cognitive Evolutionary Linguistics, Brill 2021, see https://brill.com/display/title/56852?language=en for more book information), and perspective taking in discourse, especially narrative. He just published a new theory on the origins of this phenomenon, arguing that it emerges from the combination of iconic and symbolic techniques of communication (https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fcomm.2023.623662/).

讲座摘要

Abstract

Conceptual innovations in any science (especially ‘paradigm shifts’ in the sense of Kuhn 1969) come with changes in the meaning of (some of the) words and phrases in terms of which analyses and explanations in that field are formulated. Linguistics is no exception. But linguistics is in the peculiar position that it comprises the study of the meaning of linguistic items such as words and phrases, and the way the meanings of items change. In this paper, I will first of all demonstrate how some very basic insights into linguistic-semantic concepts, especially the concept of metonymy, shed light on the risk of miscommunication in a scientific field during a period of innovation. Paradoxically, these risks are instantiated in a number of controversies in the field of linguistics itself, starting in the 19th and continuing up to the 21st century, that were triggered by the emergence of the Darwinian approach to evolution. The paper ends by exploring a recent theoretical innovation –the ‘usage-based’ approach, especially its most recent variants– that holds a promise for overcoming the controversies, provided theoretical linguists accept that theoretical terminology also in their own field is to be semantically more precise than in everyday language use, and it formulates proposals for the precise meaning of some fundamental linguistic terms.
