Project Name: Phantom Landscape

Exhibitor: YANG Yongliang

Description: In this video work, artist Yang Yongliang employs images of architecture as brushstrokes to create a stunning portrayal of heavy mountain rocks with enriched details, evoking the aesthetic of North Song Chinese landscape paintings. Whereas ancient Chinese landscape painters often used nature to express their inner thoughts and emotions, Yongliang’s work challenges viewers to reconsider their relationship with both the urban environment and the natural world. His approach invites the audience to see the beauty in our surroundings while also recognizing the complexities of the modern world we’re living in.

Phantom Landscape is Yang Yongliang’s very first video work. It features urban images the artist collects in his hometown Shanghai, as well as Hong Kong - another international port he often visited back in the early 2000s. An airplane flies through the landscape towards the end of the video, signifying a high mobility demand as a result of changes in technology, economic development and social values. The artist has also put in a wish for this work to connect with the larger world.
