Border Town

 our theatrical project

The enchanted story Border Town, echoes the rhythms of nature and the life cycle of the people who live in it – their lifestyles, their dreams, their ambitions, their thoughts, their loves, as well as their bitter misunderstandings, entanglements... The story contains fascinating contrasts between the eternal and the ephemeral, between imagination and reality, silence and sounds, joy and sorrow, life and death.

《边城》的故事令人陶醉，这个故事再现出自然之节奏与生活在其中的人们的生命循环——既包含他们的生活方式、梦想、抱负、思想、爱，又有充满苦涩的误会和纠缠……这个故事充满令人着迷的对比，即永恒与瞬息、想象与现实、无声与有声、欢悦与悲伤、生与死之间的对比。

The stream that flows along the story brings to the plot a constant movement, and the landscapes that surround it, reflect in its shapes and colors the multiple shades of the human emotions.

贯穿故事始末的溪流为故事情节带来一种持续的流动，环绕其四周的风景与溪流，以其形、色，一同反映出人类情感的诸多色调。

In our performance we will dive into the small town that Shen Congwen described almost a hundred years ago, from a contemporary perspective. Our task is not to imitate the past, but to observe the echoes it continues to transmit to us and to reflect the enigmatic boundary line between past and present – the presence of the past in our present and also the presence of the present in the way we interpret the past. Therefore, our project is built as a storytelling-theater, where there is constant movement in time. A group of actors-narrators take us on a journey through a time tunnel – they tell the story here and now, to the audience siting in Drum Tower West Theatre in Beijing, and from it they delve into the dramatic situations in West Hunan, creating transformations into the diverse characters of the town in front of the audience's eyes.

我们将在演出中从当代的视角再次深入到近百年前沈从文描绘的那个小城。我们的意向不在于模仿过去，而是去感受由过去持续传递至现在的回响，并再现过去和现在之间那道神秘的边界线——过去在此时此刻中在场，在我们阐释过去的时候，现在也在场。因此，我们选择“说故事剧场”的形式来完成这部戏，因为在说故事剧场中，时间将不断产生转移。“演员/叙事者”将带领我们穿越时间隧道——他们将在此时此地讲述故事，为北京鼓楼西剧场的观众们讲述这个故事，并由此深入湘西发生的戏剧情境，在观众眼前转变成为小城中形形色色的人物形象。

The essence of storytelling-theatre has a lot to do with polyphonic points of view – how each of the characters perceives the sequence of events from their inner world, thus, in our play, the moves that motivate the actions stem from narrations that at times complement each other, and at others – carry diversities or even contradictions.  Storytelling-theatre invites a virtuoso performance by a group of actors – dancing, singing, moving between the diverse characters, and creating interactive actions with the audience.

说故事剧场的本质与“复调式视角”息息相关——事件的发生在不同角色心中如何产生不同的理解，因此，在这部戏中，推动行动的动作有时从相互补充的叙事中生发，有时则从截然不同甚至互相矛盾的叙事中出现。说故事剧场邀请一群多才多艺的演员们进行精湛的表演——他们将跳舞、唱歌、在不同角色之间进行转变，并与观众进行互动。

We invite you to participate with us in creating the world of Border Town – to create the river together, sit on its banks, sing together, laugh together, taste sweet rice wine, observe events from alternating perspectives, and thus – celebrate together the exciting depths of the human soul.

我们想邀请您与我们一起创造边城的世界——一起创造出河流，坐在河岸上，一起唱歌，一起大笑，尝尝甜米酒，通过不断转变的视角观察事件，一同探寻人类心灵之处令人振奋不已的深度。
