Greater use of indigenous languages means a greater chance of their survival. Losing a language is more than just losing words, it is a loss of unique cultural perspectives and narratives contained within the language and culture, along with its contribution to the richness of diversity.

本土语言使用得越广泛，保存下来的几率就越大。一门语言的流失不仅仅是词汇的流失，这种语言和文化所包含的独特文化视角和文化叙事也会流失，语言的多样性也会变得匮乏。

Translators bring cultural narratives alive as they convey them to a wider, cross-cultural audience. The UN International Year of Indigenous Languages highlights the need to promote and protect indigenous languages and the rights of those who speak them. Translators, interpreters and terminologists play an important role in this mission.

译者通过将本土文化讲述给更多跨文化的读者，使得本土文化叙事得以流传和发展。联合国“国际本土语言年”强调，要促进和保护本土语言及其使用者的权利。笔译、口译和术语学家在这项工作中发挥着重要的作用。

Interpreters of indigenous languages give native speakers a chance to fully participate in cultural and political life of society and offer equality of access to basic services such as health care, education, information and justice in their mother tongue.

在本土语口译员的帮助下，本土语使用者有机会充分地参与到社会的文化和政治生活中，并平等地享受以其母语提供的医疗、教育、信息和司法等社会基本服务。

Indigenous languages embody the world’s cultural diversity. The complex systems of knowledge and culture developed and accumulated by and through indigenous languages over thousands of years are not at odds with the knowledge economies as we know them today. Diversity, in all its forms, promotes superior economic growth and outcomes for all. Indigenous languages provide intergenerational transfer of intangible cultural heritage and knowledge that will assist us in facing future global challenges.

本土语言体现了世界文化的多样性。几千年来，通过本土语言发展和积累起来的复杂的知识和文化体系，与我们今天所知的知识经济并不矛盾。各种形式的多样性都能促进经济更好地增长、产生更好的成果。本土语言提供了非物质文化遗产和知识的代际传递，帮助我们面对未来的全球性挑战。

Their disappearance would deprive us of their rich diversity and the ecological, economic and sociocultural contributions they make to society.

The United Nations chose to dedicate a whole year to encourage urgent action to preserve, revitalise and promote the importance of indigenous languages in the global village. While indigenous languages may not be the most widely spoken, they are the most numerous of the worlds languages.

联合国决定用一年的时间来鼓励大家采取紧急行动，保护、振兴和提高本土语言在地球村的重要性。虽然本土语言可能不是使用最广泛的语言，但却是世界上使用最多的语言。

In 2017 Translators, interpreters and terminologists achieved an historical milestone as the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted Resolution A/RES/71/288, recognising the role of professional translation in connecting nations, and fostering peace, understanding and development. Collectively, through their day-to-day work, language professionals support and maintain linguistic and cultural diversity, and raise awareness of the intrinsic value of indigenous languages and indigenous peoples.

2017年，联合国大会第71届会议一致通过第A/RES/71/288号决议，充分肯定了专业翻译在实现各国互联互通及促进和平、了解和发展中的作用，使专业翻译工作者和术语学家的工作具有历史性里程碑意义。语言专家在日常工作中，共同支持、维护语言和文化多样性，提高对本土语言和原住民族内在价值的认识。

In celebration of 2019, UN International Year of Indigenous Languages, this year’s theme is Translation and Indigenous Languages.

为庆祝联合国2019“国际本土语言年”，今年国际翻译日的主题定为“翻译与本土语言”。

国际翻译日纪念的是谁？

September 30 celebrates the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators. St. Jerome was a priest from North-eastern Italy, who is known mostly for his endeavour of translating most of the Bible into Latin from the Greek manus of the New Testament. He also translated parts of the Hebrew Gospel into Greek. He was of Illyrian ancestry and his native tongue was the Illyrian dialect. He learnt Latin in school and was fluent in Greek and Hebrew, which he learnt from his studies and travels. Jerome died near Bethlehem on 30 September 420.

9月30日是通俗拉丁文本《圣经》译者圣杰罗姆的逝世日，他被视为笔译员的守护圣者。圣杰罗姆是意大利东北部的神父，因根据《新约圣经》的希腊文译本将大部分《圣经》翻译成拉丁文而闻名。他还将部分《希伯来福音书》翻译成希腊文。圣杰罗姆是伊利里亚人，母语是伊利里亚方言。他在学校学习了拉丁文，又在游学过程中自学了希腊文和希伯来文，能流利使用这两种语言。圣杰罗姆于420年9月30日在伯利恒附近去世。
